Plans to build 38 homes in Shildon get the green light

A SCHEME to build 38 new homes in Shildon was given the go ahead by councillors today (Thursday, February 21).

Members of Durham County Council’s planning committee approved application for a mixture of two, three, four and five bedroom properties, including six affordable homes, at Redworth Road.

The site, which is 1.37 hectares and consists of rough grassland, had been earmarked for industrial and business development and previous applications for housing were refused.

However, at the meeting in Spennymoor, councillors heard how there was a proven over supply of employment land in the area and a need for housing.

One nearby resident had expressed concerns for the future of a nearby hedgerow that is home to bats but Principal planning officer Andrew Inch assured the committee it would remain in place.

A vote was taken and the application, which was submitted by Kenworth Ltd, was approved.
