'Wheelie bins will have a positive impact', Darlington Soroptimists told

RECYCLING MESSAGE: Phillippa Scrafton, left, with Brenda Stokoe of the Darlington branch of Soroptimist International RECYCLING MESSAGE: Phillippa Scrafton, left, with Brenda Stokoe of the Darlington branch of Soroptimist International

PHILLIPPA Scrafton was the speaker at the most recent meeting of the Darlington branch of Soroptimist International.

As management officer for waste minimalisation and recycling for Darlington Borough Council, her job is to encourage the public to reduce, reuse and recycle.

A club spokeswoman said: “She gave a fascinating insight into the technology which separates domestic refuse into metals, plastics and plastic bags which can then be recycled.

“The biodegradable materials which have been broken down are converted into pellets to be used as biomass fuel.

“Only hazardous waste is put into landfill now and each year, the percentage of household waste which is recycled is increasing.

“Mrs Scrafton assured the club that the wheeled bins which will soon be in use throughout Darlington will have several advantages.”

Aileen Little gave a vote of thanks. Jean Jackson was then presented with a long service award, having been a member of the club for 35 years.

They certainly will make an impact in the town, Who wants an ugly oversized wheelie bin at the front of their house when plastic bags were a more efficient method of collecting domestic waste. The only advantage is that we don't need Green recycle boxes any more as it can all go into the wheelie bin. Some of those Green boxes needed two refuse collectors to empty them into the wagon.

What a pair of grumpies you are on such a lovely spring day.

I promise you won't be saying that when you've had them a few weeks. An absolute godsend here.....but if you Darlo folk want to keep your rats, then that's fine.

"The only advantage is that we don't need Green recycle boxes any more as it can all go into the wheelie bin."

Glass and paper will still need sorting and putting out separately for fortnightly collection.

Can't really see what impact the wheelie bins will have on recycling, as the rubbish will go to the same place and be treated the same as it is currently.

It took Phillipa Scrafton 3 months and several reminders to respond to a simple request to clean up an area that was been ignored by Streetscene eventhough she claimed it was on a planned maintenance plan. She would be better off if she spent her time making sure the streets were cleaned properly

I am a advocate of the Black Bags? These whelie bins are just the thin end of the wedge, before we know it we will hjave a whellie bin for every thing under the sun all the colours in all the sizes? it was brought in under the Guise of health and safety? So what about all the other councils in Great Britain who still advocate there use and have no wish as far as i know to change them. Once again DBC has been DICTORIAL and wasteful?

Oh god. Only hazardous waste goes to landfill. Is this supposed to make us fel better ? Hazardous waste gets into the soil and then into the water course. Old tips are flattened out and new houses built on them and then all the hazardous waste starts to degrade and poison people. What a wonderful ststement from someone who should know better. Is this a typo, or is everyone in the town hall missing the point here ?

I keep re-reading this and that's what it says. Surely the toxic stuff should be incinerated at high temperature to kill off the toxins ?

I reckon a year down the line, we start recycling the wheelie bins as toxic waste. They are terrible things and not everyone will be able to use one, so we're on for a 2 tier collection system that will fall apart after a year and we'll have to go back to bin bags.

miketually, and anyone else. Green boxes will still be used for glass!
The bins will be a great advantage over bags. We know all the disadvantages, i.e., fire risk, some residences not having a safe place for them, vandals throwing them into the street, (keep your bloody kids in check), smaller bins for some people would be better, bins blowing away in strong winds. what the hell, live with them. The rest of the country does!
Darlington is now one of the VERY FEW places who don't have them.
It is also one of the few areas in the country to have a dedicated recycling center just outside Aycliffe.
If anyone thinks the bins won't be big enough, RECYCLE MORE!
I know what the pros and cons are with wheelie bins, I,ve done the job emptying them for Durham County Council.
They will be good for everyone, believe me!

I moved from Darlington to bishop Auckland about 7 yrs ago and the only thing I find better in bishop is the wheelie bins, so much easier than black bags no mess no vermin no smell! I live on woodhouse and can say that in the 7 yrs I lived here I have never heard of a wheelie bin been set on fire, I'm not sayin it doesn't happen but I haven't seen or heard it and it's a pretty rough area!
! Get a grip people I'm sure there are bigger problems!!!

I want 4 wheelie bins like they have in some other bigger places, one for glass, one for paper and card, one for general and one for garden waste.

It's about time we had them we are way behind everywhere else! 1 wheelie bin is not enough at least give us a garden waste bin!!! I already recycle paper etc and glass

"Darlington Soroptimists = jobs for the boys"

Recently moved back to Co. Durham after 15 years exiled in Yorkshire. I was astonished to see Darlington still using refuse sacks on bin day. What planet has Darlington Council been on for the last decade or two? About time you got wheelie bins. Let's be honest, if they weren't universally popular then 99.5% of the rest of the UK would not use them.

Also, they are handy for smack-head chavs to carry stolen goods away in - bin on the drive = handy stolen goods cart. We got sick of them nicking ours and having to pay for new bins, so we used to leave a Tesco trolley out the front for them instead. We even got a monosyllabic grunt of acknowledgement from the last druggie who broke in after the Sky box. That's a great example of Cameron's big society in action.

There's already one in Stockton. Stockton and Darlington share some council services, so why not this one. I'm concerned that toxic waste is being buried. I'd like to know where if it's in the town boundaries.

Well how do you manage at the moment marma495? Don't you have the same issue with your current arrangement.....or maybe you just throw the bags over the back yard wall!

Seriously, have some confidence folks.....these things really are great once you get into the rhythm of using them. So much easier.

Here in Teesdale, elderly or infirm folk can request assistance from DCC if you notify them first. I hope (cross fingers) that DBC has thought to do this too.

Darlington needs to get with the times. I've had wheelie bins for 13 years and we have no mess, unlike some of the states I've seen on visits 'home'. Bags placed in alleyways (particularly round the denes area) ripped open by cats, discarded food and packaging everywhere, the smell is unbelievable. The vermin must be loving it. Come on people of Darlo, do you really want to be left in the Victorian era and live in squalor?...Give your heads a shake!
