Darlington Sunday market enjoys most successful event since launch last year

AN award-winning Sunday market has enjoyed its most successful weekend since its launch last year.

Organisers of the Darlington Sunday People’s Market - crowned Britain’s favourite at the recent annual National Association of British Market Authorities Market of the Year competition - say yesterday's (Sunday, March 3)  event was the busiest since last August's launch.

Co-founder Samantha Blackham, who also runs The Diner in the Covered Market, said: “It was amazing, it was so busy. If it wasn’t busier than the launch last August it was definitely on a par with it.

“None of the traders wanted to go home; they all said they were having a really good day.

“Market traders and businesses in Darlington town centre said their takings had increased on Sunday – Coopers Coffee House said they had a 100 per cent increase in sales.”

The market was set up by local traders and residents to rejuvenate the town centre and showcase the diversity of the region.

Organisers are looking for volunteer entertainers to perform at its future markets. If you are interested in performing, or are a trader and wish to have a stall at the market, email dspm.darlington@live.co.uk or visit facebook.com/dspmsundays

The next market will be held on Sunday, April 7.
