Darlington school submits plans for new sports hall

A DARLINGTON school has applied for planning permission to build a new multi-use sports hall in the hope of improving students’ achievements.

Darlington School of Mathematics and Science (DSMS), in Cockerton, hopes to use the building, which will stand separate from the main school, to teach a variety of sports.

In the application to Darlington Borough Council, the school cites a report from Durham County Council which identified poor sports facilities at the school as a key reason for lower than average results for GCSE PE students.

The application adds: The main objective of the proposal is to provide a specialist building containing a new sports hall with change facilities. The new facilities will enable the school to deliver the current curriculum to predicted standards and ensure DSMS have a dedicated building to support its planned growth in the coming years.”

The plans also note that sports hall would be opened to the public on evenings and weekends to provide a new facility for local people.

Planning officials will consult with neighbouring properties to determine whether to decide the application under delegated powers or put it before the council’s planning committee.

Good. We need more buildings like this. I hope they maintain it too. There seems to be money to build new sports halls, but no money to repair them. The sports hall at Eastbourne Sports is in terrible condition for a fairly new building. Water damaged floors replaced by cheap boxwood and water running down the walls.
