FINAL rehearsals are underway for Darlington Choral Society’s upcoming concert, which features the works of Elgar and Vaughan Williams.

The town’s 80-strong choir – which was established more than a century ago – will perform The Music Makers by Sir Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Toward the Unknown Region on Saturday, March 23, at 7.30pm, at the Dolphin Centre.

Joined by Mezzo Soprano soloist Marie Elliott and Darlington Sinfonia Orchestra, the concert promises to be a rare treat, according to Musical Director Richard Bloodworth.

He said: “Written to the lyrics of 19th Century American poet Walt Whitman, Toward the Unknown Region in itself is relatively unknown – and, sadly, an unrecognised piece of English music history.

“However, audiences will probably recognise in The Music Makers Elgar’s much-adored signature themes taken from Enigma Variations, The Dream of Gerontius and his First Symphony.

“The concert not only combines a glorious mix of works from two of the country’s most beloved composers, but we are also thrilled to welcome back soloist Marie Elliottt.”

Included on the night will be a further two orchestral pieces by Elgar – Chanson de Nuit and Chanson de Matin.

Tickets cost £12 (£5 concessions) and are available from the Dolphin Centre, White Rose Book Shop in Thirsk, or at the door.
