Hummersknott Academy, in Darlington, enjoys runaway success at cross country championships

CROSS country runners from a Darlington school have won an inter-school championship race – becoming the first North-East students to do so in 40 years.
The team of six runners from Hummersknott Academy beat off competition from schools across the north of England to win the Northern Schools Cross Country Championship race for their age and bring home the shield, which has not come to the North-East since 1973.
After winning the regional competition at Emmanuel College, Gateshead, the team headed to Trafford, in Manchester, to take part in the northern championships.
PE teacher and team manager, Alasdair Tatham (CORRECT), said: “The boys have made a little bit of history for themselves and deserve a great deal of praise for an amazing set of performances.”
Jamie Wood, 14, took first place, while Tom Hunter, also 14, came second and 13-year-old Ross Boddy came third. Cameron Stainsby finished in fourth, Louis Parker came 15th and Jack Furphy finished in 29th place – all are 13 years old.
