Supermarket trip makes huge difference to shopper

A REGULAR supermarket shopping trip has brightened up the life of a housing association resident.

Phillip Nelthorpe, of Edmondsley, has seen his life transformed with frequent trips to Sainsbury’s, in St Helen Auckland.

The Fairoak Housing Association tenant, that supports people with learning disabilities, has become so popular with staff at the store he even gets a shout out on the store’s public address system whenever he is about.

A spokeswoman for the housing association said: “We realise that to most people going shopping is an everyday and can be a somewhat menial task, but the difference that being able to do this has made to Phillip is really phenomenal.”

I am sure that many homeowners also find their days brightened and uplifted by shopping. Indeed, it is often heard in the sunny uplands of the dales that the the opening of Marks and Spencers has brought 'rays of sunshine' to Tuesdays. Perhaps there could be a new weekly column in the Echo celebrating how people enjoy going to the shops or perhaps it could become a newspaper.

The team at Real Life Options have had huge success in supporting Philip not only to live independently but also to get out into his community and shop for himself. This is an important achievement for Philip and his support team and family which has taken over 12 months and we should congratulate them and conyinue to be supportive of people with disabilities being enabled to live independent and fulfilling lives. Well done Philip and well done Real Life Options! and thank you Sainsburys too for welcoming and empowering all members of your community.
