MEMBERS of a swimming club were bathed in glory recently when they took away a haul of medals from a major competition.
Darlington Swimming Club won 12 medals when they competed with the area’s best clubs at the Northumberland and Durham County Championships.
Thirty young swimmers from Darlington – aged between nine and 18 – took part, reaching 42 finals and recording numerous personal best times. Teenager William Smith won two gold medals and three silvers at the competition and qualified to swim in the National Championships, to be held in Sheffield in July.
Jade Cook, 12, won three medals in the breaststroke events while 11-year-old Chloe Oliver came second in the 50m butterfly event and third in the 100m butterfly event. Hannah Briggs and Nathan Warwick also took away medals.
Darlington Swimming Club head coach Glen Fenby said: “I am proud of the progress being made by the club. It is very pleasing to see these young swimmers breaking through at this level, following all their hard work and dedication in training.”
The competition was held over three weekends at the Olympic sized pool in the Sunderland Aquatic Centre.
