STUDENTS hosted a culinary extravaganza as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

The students and staff at Darlington College hosted “The Great British Menu – Cook-off!” inspired by the popular BBC Two cooking programme of the same name.

Participants were asked to create a three-course meal using British produce, aiming to impress a judging panel including College Principal Tim Grant.

Alan Wallace, from the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) in the North East, said: “’This Great British Menu – Cook off!’ was obviously designed to be great fun, but also to showcase the talent, skill and enthusiasm some of our outstanding local apprentice chefs bring to the table.”

Apprentices Tom Glasper, 16, and Mark Bray, 18, were announced as winners of last week’s contest. They overcame competition from fellow level two professional cookery apprentices, as well as staff from the college and NAS.

The cook-off concluded the sixth annual National Apprenticeships Week, which saw hundreds of events taking place across England under the theme “Apprenticeships Deliver.”

Darlington College’s sales support officer Jane Wilson said: “This was a great opportunity to increase the profile of the benefits of Apprenticeships and showcase the ability of our students under the pressure of competition.”
