TWO of the region’s leading experts on diabetes research will speak at an event in Darlington next week.

Professors Roy Taylor and Mike Trennell, from the University of Newcastle, specialise in research into the effects of diet, exercise and movement in the control of diabetes.

They will give a talk at the Dolphin Centre, at 7pm, on Tuesday (April 30).

At any given time, hundreds of Diabetes UK-funded researchers are engaged in projects committed to improving the care and treatment of diabetes, preventing it from developing in those at risk and, ultimately, finding a cure.

Following his appearance on the BBC programme ‘The Hairy Dieters’, Prof Taylor will give a talk entitled “Losing Weight like the Hairy Bikers. Can you?” Prof Trennell will present an insight into the benefits to be gained by being active and the use of “movement as a medicine”.

Physical activity combined with a healthy balanced diet is known to reduce a person’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

For people living with diabetes, healthy lifestyle choices help to manage blood glucose levels effectively. The meeting has been organised by the Diabetes UK Darlington group and is open to anyone with diabetes, family members or carers and anyone interested in reducing their risk of developing the condition.

Group secretary David Moyes said: “This promises to be an excellent evening listening to first-class speakers with a wealth of information and experience to help people control their diabetes.

“The group hopes to be able to run further meetings and events, provided we receive sufficient support.”

Admission is free For more information about the meeting or the Diabetes UK Darlington group, call Mr Moyes on 01325-252807 or email moyesdavid@live.co.uk
