A SOCIAL club that provides a safe environment for disabled people to socialise and try new activities can now hold weekly meetings thanks to a £7,800 grant.

Options Social Club will meet at the Pioneering Care Centre in Newton Ayciffe every Thursday from this week.

The club, which previously met on a fortnightly basis, offers disabled adults the chance to enjoy a host of activities, including pool, table tennis, Wii games, bowling, hydrotherapy, boxercise, new age kurling, computer sessions, parties and discos.

It also gives hardworking carers a break from their responsibilities.

The funding comes from the neighbourhood budgets of councillors Mike Dixon and Joan Gray, as well as former county councillor Paul Gittins and the late councillor Enid Paylor, via the Great Aycliffe and Middridge Area Action Partnership.

Options Social Club meets on Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm and costs £2.

The PCP also manages Options, a day project for disabled adults which aims to promote independence, choice, control and social inclusion to its participants.

Activities include daily living skills, adult education sessions, confidence and self esteem building, healthy living workshops and community activities.

There are also opportunities for residential activity weekends.
