EQUIPPED with an old car and a selection of kilts, a group of friends are heading to Scotland for an unusual fundraising venture.

Gary Hunter, from Thirlby, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, decided he wanted to do something memorable to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

So, along with three friends, he decided to buy and tax an old car for less than £400, sell sponsorship on it and drive up to John O’Groats.

On the way they will be stopping at events including the Glenurquahart Highland Games Glen Challenge, near Loch Ness. There they will take part in a ten-mile run dressed in kilts.

The venture, Bangers ‘cross the Border, will also take in other runs and events, including the Glendale Show in Northumberland.

Mr Hunter, along with Stuart Graham, David Weston and Chris Parker-Eland, from Northallerton and Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe, will be setting off from the Carpenters Arms in Felixkirk on Friday, August 23 and returning on Monday, August 26.

“I turned 50 this year and though I would like to do something different and we decided to raise money for Macmillan Cancer – all four of us have had people who have needed Macmillan Cancer Support,” said Mr Hunter, who helps run his family business, Wren Cabinet Makers.

“None of us are runners, but our first run will be near Loch Ness at the Highland games there. We’re going to be doing in excess of 1,000 miles in the car.”
