A FOOD bank which was set up to help cash-strapped people has celebrated its first anniversary with a birthday event.
The Newton Aycliffe Food Bank was set up a year ago in order to help people in County Durham.
Based at St Clare’s Church, Newton Aycliffe, the food bank is manned by volunteers and it now helps on average 15 people a week.
The group helps people in Newton Aycliffe, but it also aids residents in nearby towns like Spennymoor and Chilton.
June Temple, a co-ordinator of the food bank, said: “We can help anyone and it’s a well used facility. It’s been a success for the area.”
The Newton Aycliffe Food Bank team invited groups who have donated food to the scheme to a birthday event on Saturday (August 17).
The group has also set up a display about its work at the church.
