Drunken brawl outside Darlington pub started when a woman was touched without permission
A DRUNKEN brawl between six men outside of a pub started when one put his hands on a woman’s hips without her permission, a court heard yesterday (Thursday, August 29).
The woman was standing outside the Tanners Hall pub, in Skinnergate, in Darlington, on Monday, August 19, when she felt someone running their hands over her hips and the small of her back.
The man who touched her was identified as Jason Smith, a 35-year-old from Bath, who was later arrested and charged with common assault and public order offences.
Darlington Magistrates Court heard that a confrontation between Smith and five other men that took place shortly afterwards was a consequence of that incident.
Vickie Wilson, prosecuting, said: “CCTV operators saw a group of men including Jason Smith standing opposite the pub.
“Smith punched a male in the group and the group began to punch and kick him, causing him to fall to the ground.”
Representing himself, Smith said: “I am ashamed of my actions. I started drinking at 10.30am. I went out and got drunk, kept on drinking and got into trouble.”
Smith – who has 13 other convictions – was fined £250 for common assault and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £25 and costs of £85.
