Police look to sell city police station to property developer
3:31pm Friday 30th August 2013 in News
POLICE bosses are negotiating with a business looking to buy Ripon’s police station and replace it with a property development.
North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan said the North Street station had been identified as “a potential disposal opportunity” for a number of years.
Mrs Mulligan said: “The developer who we are looking to sell to is in a unique position and has the opportunity to develop land behind the police station, which could only be reached over our site.”
“Whether or not the sale goes through, we fully intend to retain a policing presence in Ripon and are currently investigating options for a new facility.”
The potential developer has not been named and it remains unclear if the replacement police base in the city will retain the same number of officers.
The station’s front counter opening hours were cut by 49 per cent in 2011 as the force sought to make £20m of cuts.
