New chaplain at Durham School
THE Reverend Philip John Bentham has been named the new chaplain to Durham School. He was previously chaplain to Bethany School, in Goudhurst, Kent. Meanwhile, the Venerable Stuart Bain, Archdeacon of Sunderland, has taken on the additional role of Associate Minister of The Boldons. The changes were announced by the Church of England’s Durham Diocese.
LATE LECTURES: A late summer lecture series continues next week with David Varley talking on the subject: Such Terrifying Vistas of Reality: Lunatic Landscapes in the works of HP Lovecraft. Mr Varley will speak in Newcastle University’s Percy Building on Tuesday (September 10) and Alington House, North Bailey, Durham City, the following day. All lectures start at 7.30pm and are free and open to all.
REMEMBRANCE FESTIVAL: A Festival of Remembrance Concert will be held in Durham Cathedral on Saturday, November 9, at 7.30pm. The event will feature the Bands of the Royal Signals (Northern) and Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, John Roland, Julie Pendleton and Vicki Guillory and will be compered by Alasdair Hutton, the voice of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It will include a 70th anniversary tribute to the Battle of the Atlantic, Dambusters and Bomber Command. Doors open at 6.45pm. Tickets, priced £18 and £12, can be booked by calling 07910-120727 between 9am and 5pm on weekdays. Proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion and ABF, The Soldiers’ Charity.
