Poop Scoop Swoop scheme launched in Barnard Castle to tackle dog fouling
A MARKET town has launched a new bid to tackle the problem of dog fouling.
Barnard Castle Town Council's Poop Scoop Swoop project will involve a poster campaign and the offer of free bags for dog owners to use to clean up after their pets.
The poster, designed with help from Durham County Council's civic pride team, will be displayed at dog fouling hotspots around Barnard Castle.
The bags, which were bought thanks to a grant from Teesdale Action Partnership (Tap), will be available from distribution points at the town council office, in Galgate, The Witham, once it reopens, and Teesdale Leisure Centre.
Barnard Castle Mayor Frank Harrison said: “It is hoped the availability of these bags will persuade more dog owners to swoop and scoop their dog’s poop.
“Any litter bin can be used to dispose of dog waste, provided it is properly bagged.”
Tap co-ordinator Craig Morgan added: “This issue always seems to come up and it’s great to see the town council taking some positive action to deal with it.”
Anyone who spots a dog owner not cleaning up after their pet is urged to report the incident to Durham County Council on 03000-261000 noting the time, date, location and description of the dog.
This will enable neighbourhood wardens to make enquiries and take action against the offender. All reports are dealt with in confidence.
