Bishop Auckland couple celebrate 60 years of happy marriage

LOVE, hard work and a good sense of humour are the ingredients needed to create a happy marriage, according to one couple.
Albert and Isabel Fawcett, of Gent Road, Bishop Auckland, believe those three components have steered them successfully to their diamond wedding anniversary, which they celebrate today (Thursday, September 12), and will continue to do so for many years to come.
The couple met at a dance in their early 20s before courting for five years. They married at the Methodist Chapel, Coundon, 60 years ago to the day. They enjoyed a honeymoon to Blackpool.
Mr Fawcett, 87, spent time serving in the RAF. At the age of 40 he went to college to gain the necessary qualifications to become a teacher – a job he did for about 30 years.
Mrs Fawcett, 86, worked in a hardware shop in Coundon.
They have two daughters Jacqueline and Hilary, and three grandchildren.
Mr Fawcett said: “No married is perfect but we never go to bed on an argument.
“Our marriage has been based on love, hard work and a good sense of humour. There are too many serious people in this world.”
They plan to celebrate their anniversary with a meal at the Park Head Hotel, in Coundon.
