Head welcomes School Minister's praise
A HEADTEACHER says being congratulated by the Schools Minister is great news for his primary.
Mark Turner, headteacher at Durham Gilesgate Primary School, Durham City, said the letter from David Laws shows his school is on its way to becoming outstanding.
Mr Laws wrote to nine primary schools and five secondary schools which had performed the best in new tables ranking schools against those with similar intakes of children.
Mr Turner said: “It is fantastic to receive a letter such as this and know that the hard work and commitment of our teachers, pupils, parents and governors is appreciated, valued and recognised.
“Ofsted currently say that we are a good school with some outstanding features and this letter confirms that we are on our way to becoming an outstanding school overall.”
The praise for the school is the latest in a string of accolades.
Last December, the school received another letter of congratulations from Mr Laws, in February Ofsted judged the school to be good with outstanding features and in May Tim Leunig, a Department for Education adviser, described it as a centre for excellence after seeing on a visit how children with cochlear implants are taught in mainstream education.
