Thief steals bikes to help drug addict get home
A THIEF today said he had stolen two mountain bikes to help a drug addict get home.
Darlington man Fred Patterson, 45, was moving the bikes from the summerhouse of a property in the town when the home-owner returned and challenged him and his accomplice.
The pair fled without the bikes and were later arrested.
Former drug addict Patterson – of Gladstone Street – pleaded guilty to burglary and was fined £110 and ordered to pay costs of £105 at Darlington Magistrates Court today.
Sonny Lawson, mitigating, said Patterson – who had managed to stay out of trouble for two years - had met up with an old associate who had persuaded him to take the bikes.
Mr Lawson said: “The associate, who was a drug addict, was struggling to walk and told Mr Patterson there was a summer house where he could get two bikes to pedal home.
“Mr Patterson stupidly made the decision to help him with that.
“He is absolutely distraught that this has brought him before the courts and it has done very little to impress his wife and children, after two years of staying out of trouble.”
