Kirk Merrington summer fair
A VILLAGE will hold a summer fair tomorrow (Saturday, September 21)- on the first anniversary of a scheme to ensure residents can stock up the cupboards on their doorstep.
Volunteers at Kirk Merrington Community Centre launched a fortnightly market last year to bring a range of local traders to the village.
Organisers wanted to ensure residents, particularly the elderly or those without cars, could still buy essentials in the village following the closure of its shop.
Markets are held every other Friday in the community centre, from 10am to noon.
Tomorrow (Saturday, September 21) the centre will host a fete including a car boot sale, family attractions such as a ball pit, slide and football challenges, from 10am to 4pm.
Founder Diane Thompson said: “It was set up on the 21st last September so we wanted to mark that and hold a fun event for all of the community.
“We went on to form a task team which has about 30 volunteers who can be called upon to help people with all sorts of tasks like clearing snow in the winter, cleaning or dog walking or offering company.”
Mrs Thompson praised the efforts of volunteer Carole Irving who helps run the market and coffee mornings at the centre.
