New Christmas lights to become reality for Bishop Auckland
A TOWN centre has been given a boost for Christmas after an appeal to raise funds for new festive lights reached its target.
Bishop Auckland Town Team has been trying to find £20,000 for new Christmas lights since the start of this year.
With the help of fundraising, grants and donations from councillors’ allowances, the plan for Newgate Street can now become a reality.
The town team launched its appeal after concerns were raised that the lights were looking past their best. The group, which is made up of volunteers, is trying to make improvements to the town centre in an effort to boost visitor numbers.
Speaking to members of Bishop Auckland Town Council, town team volunteer Clive Auld said the group is pleased with how things are moving forward.
“It is becoming a quite exciting time for us,” he said. “It seems a long time since we started this but it has been made possible by some great people and it is making things better for the town.”
The final donation has been made by county councilors Sam Zair and Joy Allen through their neighbourhood budgets.
Plans are being made to use some of the money to put Christmas lights down Fore Bondgate, in addition to Newgate Street.
Bishop Auckland Town Team is also launching a website about the town and what it has to offer. It is expected to be launched imminently.
It will include a history of the town, events and a directory detailing businesses, pubs and schools.
Inclusion in the directory costs £49 a year, and all proceeds will be used to stage events in the town or invested in the website.
So far about 15 businesses have signed up but when it is up and running the events team plan to promote it from the Newgate Shopping Centre.
