Jubilee celebrations as new facilities open at 50-year-old youth centre in Bowburn
A FAMILY fun day is being staged to mark the golden jubilee of a village’s youth facility.
But Saturday's (September 28) festivities will be very much a case of looking forward to a bright future at Bowburn Youth Centre, in County Durham.
The centre's 50th anniversary will be marked with some of its newest members helping to launch a new group and community gym.
Durham County Council’s One Point youth workers are hosting the event at the community building in Burn Street, described as “in the heart of the village”, four miles south-east of Durham.
Council chairman Pauline Charlton will open the fun day at 11am with local GP and former national fencing champion, Dr Anton Pollard, officially cutting the ribbon to open the new gym.
Improvements at the centre have included extending the gym, with the installation of a state-of-the-art fitness suite and new weights equipment.
As part of the wider enhancement of facilities an improved entrance and frontage has been created at the neighbouring community centre, featuring a new garden and accessible parking.
Both projects were backed by Durham County Council’s Bowburn Village Improvement Fund, while the community gym was established thanks to the council’s Wellness on Wheels project.
Visitors will be invited to try out the fitness machines, while a bouncy castle, face painting and a family disco will keep younger ones entertained along with a climbing wall and a zoo lab full of creepy crawlies and snakes.
Twenty or more local groups and organisations will be on hand with food stalls, games and information.
Members of the Rainbow Adventure storytelling group will entertain youngsters in the three to 13-year-old bracket, between 11.30am and 12.30pm.
The fun day runs until 3pm, with further information available on 0191-377 0626.
