Fitness class is a breath of fresh air

MEMBERS of a keep fit class are turning heads on the streets of a market town.
Gym instructor Jackie Walker’s Wednesday morning group at Bedale Leisure Centre have ditched their gym to experience exercise in the open air.
Members of the group say they don’t mind that they attract quizzical glances as they do push-ups on trees and use fences as posts to lunge against.
Ms Walker said the sessions would always be held in the open-air unless the weather conditions were severe.
She said: “Sometimes use the park or go along Firby Road into the wood.
“We use a bridge in the woods to do step-ups and we do squats in the cornfield.
“We get funny looks from passing walkers, but we don’t care, we are out exercising in the fresh air and having fun.”
The session aims to improve cardiovascular fitness, but the group also use free weights, resistance bands, skipping ropes and different equipment to strengthen and tone other major muscle groups.
Ms Walker said: “The class is ideal for beginners right through to intermediates as long as participants don’t mind getting their trainers dirty.”
For details about the class, which leaves the leisure centre at 10.45am and returns at 11.45am, call 01677-427272 or visit hambletonleisure.co.uk
