Police warn 14 drivers over misuse of bus lane
MORE than a dozen drivers have been warned about using the bus lane on a busy commuter route.
Police carried out an operation on the A690 leading into Durham City on Monday, following an increase in complaints about motorists using the bus lane, which operated from 7am to 7pm.
An unmarked police car was used during the operations and 14 drivers were pulled over and spoken to about their behaviour.
Chief inspector Ed Turner, of Durham Constabulary, said: "The operation was a direct response to complaints we have been receiving from the public about drivers misusing the bus lane.
"The problem has been compounded by the ongoing roadworks at Belmont which has led to a slight increase in congestion.
"There seems to be a groundswell of opinion on the issue because, from the feedback we’ve had, the operation seems to have been well received.
"The bus lane is there for a purpose".
Police said the operation would be repeated periodically over coming weeks.
