Hartlepool artist's work goes on show at Barnard Castle's NeST Gallery
A TEACHER-turned-artist whose work has featured in two London exhibitions now has paintings and sculptures on display much closer to home.
The NeST is different to other galleries in that the artists who show their work also help to staff the complex.
“I came for a look around and thought this was a really good idea – it is a gallery by artists for artists,” said Mr Dingley, 45, who is originally from Cape Town, South Africa.
“There is nothing like this in Hartlepool. In a place like this people get to see you and get to know you.”
He added: “At a lot of galleries you will see the paintings but not the artist, whereas here, people can interact with the artists.”
Although he has been a practising artist for 23 years, Mr Dingley only turned to it full time earlier this year, having previously taught art and English at schools in Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
His work was shown as part of exhibitions at the London Art Fair and Brick Lane gallery.
“I paint and sculpt. I have a natural history background and a lot of what I do takes nature as its theme,” he said.
