Schools rewarded for cycling and walking campaign
8:00pm Wednesday 9th October 2013 in News
DARLINGTON schools have received awards for encouraging their pupils to cycle or walk to school.
Representatives from 11 schools across the borough came together on Wednesday (October 9), at Carmel College to recognise this year’s Modeshift Stars award winners.
The awards ceremony took place as part of the Local Motion Schools Action Afternoon.
Seven schools were presented with bronze awards and four schools received silver award plaques.
The Federation of Abbey Schools jumped straight to silver level, despite only joining the scheme recently.
The scheme works to reduce car use and increase the number of children making an environmentally friendly journey to and from school.
Councillor Andy Scott, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for health, said: “Our schools play a major role in encouraging children to get active on their journey to school.
“Modeshift is a framework which rewards schools for their efforts and helps build a healthy school ethos.”
