New base for Evenwood Post Office would be 'a monumental change for the village'
PROPOSALS to relocate a Post Office branch have been described as a 'monumental change for the village'.
If the move goes ahead, the branch in Evenwood, near Bishop Auckland, would move to Kash Retail, in Shirley Terrace, from its current location in Swan Street.
Post Office officials say if the move goes ahead the new arrangements would offer a modern open plan setting, while opening hours would be doubled, with services available from 6.30am-9pm seven days a week.
At a meeting this week, Evenwood Parish Council members were told the move had been prompted by the retirement of the current sub-post mistress.
Chairwoman Councillor Barbara Nicholson said: “It's a monumental change for the village, but the best thing about it is that we are retaining a Post Office when a lot of people aren't.”
She said the only concern was the parking situation near the proposed new location.
A six-week public consultation into the proposal ends on October 22. Anyone wishing to have their say can post comments by Freepost to Your Comments, Post Office Ltd or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Alternatively, comments can be made via the customer helpline on 08457-223344 or textphone 08457-223355.
There is also an online questionnaire at postofficeviews.co.uk, using the branch code 31130999.
