Gainford Parish Council chairman stands down

STANDING DOWN: The chairman of Gainford Parish Council has stood down. Councillor Linda Britton said she was unable to continue due to work commitments. Vice-chairman Coun Andie Mackay has taken over, with a new number two due to be elected at the parish council's November meeting.
PUB GONE: Parish councillors in Gainford have lamented the loss of a village pub. Members' views were sought on proposals to convert the former Lord Nelson into a house. Coun Andie Mackay said it was sad to see the pub lost to the village. No objections to the proposal were raised.
WORKSHOP DATES: Two workshops have been organised as part of plans to establish a local neighbourhood plan in Gainford. One will be held during the afternoon of Thursday, November 7, and the other on the morning of Saturday, November 9. Gainford Parish Council, which is leading the project, will circulate leaflets around the village in advance of the meetings.
STEPPING OUT: A supper dance will be held at Butterknowle Village Hall on Saturday, November 2, from 8pm to 11.30pm. Entertainment will be provided by Graeme Scarlett. Tickets are £7. Contact 01388-718075 or 01388-718448 for more information.
MUSIC NIGHT: Three Northumbrian musicians will provide the entertainment at Boldron Village Hall, Boldron, near Barnard Castle, on Thursday, November 14. Duo Fiona Lander and Paul Mason, who perform as Landermason, will join songwriter Gareth Davies-Jones on stage. Tickets are £10 or £20 for a family. Call 01833-638210 for more information.
OPEN MIC: An open mic night will be held on the first Friday of the month, starting on November 1, at the Scarth Hall, Staindrop. Start time is 8pm and any budding local musicians are welcome to take to the stage. A PA system is provided at the venue, but those taking part should bring their own amp. Admission is free. FESTIVE FUN: Barnard Castle's Christmas tree lights switch-on is due to take place on Friday, December 6. The town council is also planning to host a fireworks display on Friday December 13 as part of this year's festive celebrations.
HARVEST FESTIVAL: Wind Mill Methodist Chapel is to hold its harvest festival on Sunday (October 20) at 2.30pm. The service will be led by Reverend Richard Bainbridge. The following evening (Monday, October 21), a concert will be given by The Beltones starting at 7.15pm, followed by the sale of fruit and veg.
REQUIEM MASS: The Ordinariate of Our lady of Walsingham at St Osmund's Church, Gainford, will hold All Souls' Day requiem mass at noon on Saturday, November 2. It will be followed by a drinks reception in the parish house. All welcome. For further details, contact 01325-730191.
