Herbert thanked after Ferryhill church's Bloom win
A VOLUNTEER who has tended to a church’s grounds for almost four decades has been praised for his dedication.
Herbert Saunders, of Ferryhill, has been a volunteer gardener at the town’s All Saints Church for 38 years.
He took over from the previous gardener, Bill Abbott, who retired at the age of 80, after answering a call for help from then-incumbent Father Bernard Smith.
For some of that time he was helped his father, Harry Saunders.
The Mayor of Ferryhill, Coun Ken Campbell, invited to Mr Saunders to Ferryhill Town Hall to thank and congratulate him for his work after the church won a silver medal in the Northumbria in Bloom contest.
The church finished joint third in the category for best kept religious grounds, maintained by parishioners.
Coun Zena Roddam, the town council’s portfolio holder for Ferryhill in Bloom, said: “We appreciate all the hard work that goes into it and it helps towards the appearance of the town.”
