Hundreds attend annual charity ball in Darlington
AN annual charity ball, which was this year attended by more than 250 people, has been hailed a huge success.
Darlington mayor Charles Johnson and mayoress Carol Johnson hosted the event, in the Dolphin Centre, on Friday (October 18) evening.
People from all walks of Darlington life attended, including councillors, businesspeople and the town’s MP Jenny Chapman.
Also in attendance, as guests of the mayor and mayoress, were students from Darlington College who won a competition to design artwork for promotional material for the ball.
Guests were entertained by stilt walkers and a string quartet, as well as performances by seven-strong female swing vocal group Vintage Belles, who performed no fewer than 21 songs.
Proceeds from the event will go to local good causes in Darlington, which will be identified by the mayor over the coming months.
Coun Johnson said: “I was concerned about the tickets sales in the run-up to the ball because we had budgeted for 250 sales.
“At the end of the day, we have sold 252 tickets, so we should be spot-on for the budget.
“We will decide at the end of the mayoral year which groups will benefit.
“It will go to real local community groups that are doing good things for Darlington and worthwhile things that benefit the town.
“We have had a lot of compliments about the ball and not had a single complaint, so we are very happy.
“All the various individual elements came together well, it was orchestrated perfectly.”
The event was sponsored by Darlington-based PR company Recognition, whose founder Graham Robb praised Coun and Mrs Johnson for their work during the mayoral year.
