Vandals target Bishop Auckland allotments
4:13pm Tuesday 22nd October 2013 in News
AN investigation is underway after up to 26 gardens on a Bishop Auckland allotment were vandalised.
Three poly tunnels and more than two dozen sheds and greenhouses were targeted at the Pollards Allotments, on Etherley Lane, between 5pm on Friday, October 18 and 8am the following morning.
Tools were also taken, along with paraffin heaters.
Bobby Latcham, secretary of the Pollards Allotment Association said about half of the 52 gardens at the site had been targeted and he is working with allotment holders to compile a list of exactly what has been taken.
He said if gardeners had heat on in greenhouses they have to race to get them repaired or they could lose plants due to bad weather.
"Most of what was taken wasn’t valuable,” he said. “They've grabbed stuff and caused destruction.
“It is awful. The gardeners here are a nice set of people. There are a school children and women who could be especially upset. They work hard on their allotments.
“Whoever did this must have been in a couple of hours wrecking the place. If they've targeted a greenhouse they've smashed every pane not just one."
One plot holder, who asked not to be named, said "It makes me angry and disappointed. It was a horrible thing to see.
“They stole items from our shed but left more valuable things behind. It looks like it was mindless vandalism by kids but why they found it fun I don't know."
PC Sam Chong, of Bishop Auckland police station, said: “At this stage only one person has reported paraffin heaters missing from their shed but enquiries suggest up to 26 sheds may have been broken into and in addition a number of poly tunnels have been slashed.”
He added: “Enquiries are ongoing. It is quite a large area and it is very open.”
Witnesses are asked to call PC Chong on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800-555-111.
