Rotary club hosts annual music night
THE Rotary Club of Durham Bede will present Friday Night is Music Night at Elvet Methodist Church, Old Elvet, Durham, on Friday, November 8, at 7pm. Tickets are £7.50, including tea and coffee. Entry for children and students is £2.50. Proceeds will go to St Cuthbert’s Hospice and the Rainbow Trust. Free parking will be available at the Durham University car park on Territorial Lane, opposite the church.
HISTORY CLUB: Wheatley Hill History Club will meet in Wheatley House, Woodlands Avenue, Wheatley Hill, on Wednesday (October 30), when Arthur Dodds will give a talk on The Gunpowder Plot. The meeting starts at 7pm and is open to non-members. Entry costs £2, including refreshments and raffle tickets.
FUNDING SURGERIES: County Durham Community Foundation will hold funding surgeries in Shotton on Wednesday (October 30), Wheatley Hill on Wednesday, November 6, Hamsterley on Wednesday, November 27 and Shakespeare Hall, North Road, Durham, on Wednesday, December 4, all from 10am to 11am. BURSARY OFFER: Soroptimist International of Durham is offering a one-year bursary. The winner will enjoy membership of the professional women’s organisation and its activities from April 2014. Candidates should be interested in women’s issues, aged 18 and up, aspirational and willing to attend meetings, contribute to discussions and participate in activities. HOUGHALL MEETING: Houghall Horticultural Society will meet in the conference hall of East Durham College’s Houghall campus, near Durham, on Tuesday, November 12, when Dr Phil Gates will talk on The Wild Side of Gardening. PRINTS TALK: Dr Rosina Buckland, curator of the Japanese collections at the National Museums of Scotland, will give a talk on Kabuki, Japanese theatre prints, at Durham University’s Oriental Museum on Wednesday, November 6, at 7.30pm in room 009, Elvet Hill House, near the museum, in Durham. The talk has been organised by the Friends of the Oriental Museum. Entry costs £3 for adults, £1 for concessions and is free for Friends members.
