Police officers to target festive thieves and troublemakers in Bishop Auckland
6:00pm Monday 4th November 2013 in News
THIEVES and troublemakers looking to cause problems for shoppers in Bishop Auckland are to be targeted by the police during the festive period.
Operation Elmer starts next Monday (November 11) when highly visible police officers will patrol at the retail parks in Tindale Crescent and St Helen Auckland.
A mobile police station will park at a variety of locations at different times throughout the operation, giving shoppers and residents an opportunity to speak to the officers.
PC Kimberley Marshall, of the Bishop Auckland Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We forged great links with the shops in the area who are all members of an excellent Shopwatch scheme.
“This enables staff and security guards to have radio contact with the neighbourhood team and share information.
“We want to ensure that for the majority of people who come to Bishop Auckland to shop as the festive season approaches, the experience is a pleasurable one.
“But those individuals who think they can take advantage of busy shops to engage in criminal activity need to know they aren’t welcome and their actions won’t be tolerated.”
A similar campaign, Operation Ruby, ran last year and was highly successful in keeping crime and anti-social behaviour at very low levels.
Daily updates on the operation will be posted on Bishop Auckland police team’s Facebook page and their Twitter account, @BishopNPT.
