CHRISTMAS celebrations are set to go with a seasonal sparkle in a County Durham market town.

Barnard Castle Town Council has organised a free fireworks display and entertainment on Scar Top starting on Friday, December 13.

The North Tyneside Steel Band will kick off the evening at 6pm followed by the Castle Players and local choir No Added Sugar performing a version of The 12 Days of Christmas at 6.30pm.

The fireworks display will be launched from inside the castle walls at 6.45pm. The viewing area will be the castle green and Woodleigh grounds on Scar Top.

Barnard Castle mayor, Councillor Frank Harrison, said: “This will be a spectacular, free display that will celebrate Christmas with a bang.”

The Scar Top road will be closed to traffic from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and the event will be marshalled for public safety.

The display is provided by Martin Bacon, from NES Pyro.
