A FLEDGLING charity that supports people living with brain injury has secured its first round of funding.

Headway Darlington and District, which was launched this summer, is a branch of Headway, the brain injury association.

It holds monthly sessions for people with acquired brain injury and their families and carers.

It is to receive £4,500 from the County Durham Foundation with donors including BHP Law, Darlington Building Society, Northumbria Water and the Community Health Revenue Fund.

Chairman Giles Hudson said the funding would allow the group to offer a wider range of activities, such as excursions and specialist therapies, and increase the amount of support they can give to those living with brain injury.

He said: “Having sustained a serious brain injury myself, I know how vital it is for people to have the right support during their recovery and beyond.

“We’re delighted to have secured this funding, which we believe will help us to reach more people in the Darlington area and allow them access to a greater range of services.”

Headway Darlington and District holds free sessions on the first Tuesday of every month from 1pm to 3pm.

Activities include group discussions, games and educational sessions to help people understand and cope with the effects of brain injury. Light refreshments are served.

The next session is on Tuesday, January 7, at Darlington Fire Station, St Cuthbert’s Way, DL1 5LN.
