NURSERY school children can get themselves lost for fun thanks to a gift from their former headteacher.

When Carol Dawson announced her retirement from the George Dent Nursery on Elms Road in the summer, she knew she wanted to leave a lasting legacy for the children.

After months of planning, a maze was created out of yew trees in the school grounds and new headteacher Neil Parker said the children “absolutely loved it” when it was officially unveiled this week.

He added: “They’ve had a lot of fun with it.

“It will get as big as we allow the trees to grow, once they are established we will just take the tops off next year; I don’t want to lose children in there!”

Mrs Dawson had worked at George Dent for six years and her retirement in July rounded off a 39-year teaching career, spent mostly in the Darlington area.
