A TEENAGER’s disappointment at a cookery competition’s cancellation soon turned to joy when the organisers helped him further his foodie ambitions.
Gareth Metcalf, aged 15, from Boldron, near Barnard Castle, had entered a culinary contest with a prize of work experience in local restaurants, but it was cancelled due to a lack of entries.
The event organisers, the Love Food project, were so impressed with Gareth’s enthusiasm, they teamed up with one of their supporters – David Hunter, head chef at the Headlam Hall Hotel – to offer him work experience in the establishment’s kitchen.
The youngster, who attends Teesdale School, said: “My passion for food started when I was about five cooking with my grandma and nana and it really grew from there.
“Being able to have this experience is beyond my wildest imagination.”
Angela Whiting, from Love Food, said: “We are very grateful to David for giving Gareth this opportunity.”
Gareth was also presented with a signed cookbook.
