IMPROVEMENTS have been made to a village hall car park after supporters raised thousands of pounds.

Members of the village hall committee at Butterknowle, near Bishop Auckland, decided to act due to the deteriorating state of the car park surface and the increasing number of potholes.

There was not enough money to pay for resurfacing, but tons of loose chippings have improved the situation.

Klara Whiley, secretary of Butterknowle Village Hall, said: “We looked at grants but kept getting knocked back.

“But we managed to raise more than £4,500 through loads of community donations, fundraising events, £250 from the parish council and some money from the James Knott Trust.

“Winter was approaching and we felt we needed to do something.”

She added: “Even if this is an interim measure, the car park is better than it was – the potholes were getting bigger.”

Next on the committee's agenda is the redecoration of the hall's interior and replacement stage lighting.
