A trail of festive stars has been put around Bedale to bring the church and shops and businesses together to promote both sides of Christmas.

The idea is children can follow the stars in a competition being run by the community. Rev Ian Robinson, vicar of Bedale, said: "Last year we did a trail of sheep, and this year we decided to go for stars, it’s a way for the community to work together.”

Each star is numbered, and has the name of a star constellation. Trail sheets are available from several locations in town and include a competition to identify the constellations and businesses.

On Saturday (December 21) a special nativity procession, including Rosie, the donkey, will do the trail starting at 3pm outside Wycar Methodist chapel, following the stars around Bedale stopping off at several locations for carols and scenes from the nativity.

Rev Robinson said: "The trail will draw to a close in the Chantry Hall where the stable will be established and the winners of the star trail competition are announced.

"It’s all part of moves by local churches to work together with businesses and stores to promote the town, and also remember, as well as the commercial side, the real meaning of Christmas.

“We’re hoping to build on this, following different themes to create a regular attraction for the town.”
