DOG lovers across County Durham are being warned not to get caught up in the growing number of puppy selling scams.

Websites ask for payment - in some cases several hundreds of pounds - via bank transfers and they promise to have the puppies transported.

It is only several weeks after payments have been made that it becomes apparent that the dog does not exist. Victims should call Durham County Council's fair trading team on 03000-261-016 or Citizens Advice on 08454-040506.

People with information about sellers can call the RSPCA on 0300-1234-999.

CURRENCY STOLEN: A quantity of foreign currency, together with jewellery, laptops and a British citizenship medal, were stolen from a cottage in Binchester, Bishop Auckland, between 5.10pm and 11.15pm on Sunday, December 8. Witnesses are asked to call Crook CID on 101.

CHARITY BOOST: Children North-East has received £521,383 from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. Last year, the charity helped 6,753 vulnerable children and young people through projects across the region.
