A SUPPORT group that helps people with alcohol problems has received a grant to provide new activities for its members.

The Great Aycliffe and Middridge Area Action Partnership awarded Newton Aycliffe Alcohol Self Support (NAASS) £1,050 for diversionary activities such as cooking, art and sport.

Developing new pastimes allows members to overcome feelings of boredom and isolation which can lead to a relapse.

The Pioneering Care Partnership (PCP) and Durham Alcohol Support formed the friendly and informal group earlier this year, thanks to funding from the Health Priority Fund.

The meetings, which are led by volunteers who have had problems with alcohol in the past, take place from 11am until 1pm every Thursday at the Pioneering Care Centre on Carers Way.
