A POPULAR gardening course is to return to one of the region’s leading agricultural colleges in the New Year.

Expert horticulturist Mike Hirst, a member of Houghall Horticultural Society Committee and the Institute of Horticulture, will lead the ten-week course at East Durham College’s Houghall Campus, in Durham City.

Topics to be covered include pruning, seed sowing, pricking out seedlings, propagation and planting standard trees.

Mr Hirst said: "This course offers a wide range of topics to cater for the keen amateur gardener.

"It aims to offer advice and help on how to successfully grow healthy plants with the emphasis on an informal and entertaining teaching style."

The course starts on January 8 at Houghall Campus and classes take place every Wednesday from 10am to noon.

The whole course costs £160 and more details and enrolment information is available from Student Services on 0191-375 4700.
