WALKERS enjoying a popular Darlington nature reserve can enter and exit via a smart new metal kissing gate.
The gate, at the Richmond Way entrance to Maidendale Nature Reserve, next to the Moorfields estate, will provide a circular walk around the reserve and estate.
Darlington Borough Council feels the gate, which also has disabled access, will improve access to the nature reserve, which is popular with anglers, dog walkers and cyclists.
It has worked with Maidendale Local Nature and Fishing Reserve Trust and local residents to look at ways to improve access to the site.
Councillor Nick Wallis, cabinet member for leisure and environment, said: “Maidendale is one of our most popular reserves and I am delighted that the new gate will enable even more people to enjoy this unique green space and water area.
“We have worked closely with the trust and local residents to improve access to the site and I hope this will encourage even more people to enjoy this area.”
Councillor Lee Vasey, ward member for Eastbourne, said: “This nature reserve is a wildlife haven on our doorstep. As well as being a popular recreation area for local residents, it is home to important rare species including great crested newts and the emperor dragon fly.
“The gate will make is easier for more people to enjoy what’s on offer.”
