THE York Army Museum, near Clifford’s Tower in the city, has been awarded a £1m lottery grant to tell the story of the British soldier, ahead of the centenary of the First World War next year.

The museum plans to use the funds to transform its regimental collections.

It will focus on the collections of the Royal Dragoon Guards and the Prince of Wales’ Own Regiment of Yorkshire, which reflect the roles of the cavalry and infantry in the region over the past 328 years.

Learning programmes will explore the impact of the First World War in Yorkshire and beyond.

FLAGSHIP DEVELOPMENT: Plans by insurance firm Hiscox to build a £19m new office block in York have been approved by the City of York Council’s planning committee. The development in Hungate will become the international firm’s new flagship office and is expected to create 500 jobs in the city. York Civic Trust gave its support to the application, describing the development as a “work of art”.
