A TEENAGER from Newton Aycliffe has successfully completed his basic training in the Royal Navy.

Engineering Technician (Marine Engineer) Owain Jones, 17, began his ten-week course at the Royal Navy training base, in Cornwall, in October.

To mark the end of the course the former pupil at Greenfield Comprehensive School took part in a passing out parade at HMS Raleigh, in Cornwall.

He said: “I joined the Royal Navy to have a job to be proud of, travel the world and for the job security.

“The training has been a great experience which has taught me many new skills. After I finish my professional training I hope to progress up through the ranks. ”

Following his Christmas leave, he will report to HMS Sultan where he will learn marine engineering skills.

Once the teenager is fully qualified he will work on everything from the ship’s hull and its engines to its fuel, hydraulic and fire fighting systems.
