A HOUSING provider is building homes for specifically for older people on a Durham estate.

Not-for-profit company Four Housing is developing six, two-bed bungalows at Cuthbert Avenue, Sherburn Road, in a £740,000 scheme with Durham County Council.

The homes are being built by Esh Property Services and have received a £168,000 grant funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

Two of the properties have been designed to allow full wheelchair access and all will have generous space, flexible layout options, and private gardens and parking.

The bungalows have also been designed to be energy efficient and will achieve Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, a national standard for the sustainable design and construction of new homes.

Four Housing Chief Executive Paul Tanney said: “At Four Housing we’re committed to improving the lives of our customers, by building homes that are right for them at different points in their lives.

“This includes considering the needs of older community members. “The bungalows have been designed in consultation with local residents who felt there was a great need for this type of housing in the community.”

As part of the development, Four Housing and Durham County Council will improve a multi-use games area near the new properties.

Mr Tanney said: “As the site is located next to the Pelaw View Community Centre, this will allow new residents to integrate into the existing community, helping them to live full and independent lives.”
