AN unemployed man stole gift sets from a Darlington shop because his benefits had been sanctioned, a court heard.
Robert Webster stole four Gillette gift sets worth £24 from Wilkinsons, in Darlington, on November 26 but later discarded them after running away from security staff.
The 27-year-old, of Pensbury Street, Darlington, admitted theft when he appeared at the town's magistrates’ court today (Tuesday, December 31).
Ben Pegman, mitigating, said Webster had been short of money as his benefits had been sanctioned.
Magistrates handed him a six-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £24 compensation.
