A NEW fundraising group will become the local face of a national charity that provides vital care and support to terminally ill people and their families.

Bishop Auckland Marie Curie Cancer Care Fundraising Group was officially launched today (Monday, January 6) but members have already made a big difference to the charity.

Shortly before Christmas, volunteers held a collection at Sainsbury’s in Bishop Auckland, where they raised £660 for the charity.

Member Lynn Rielly and her husband, Gerry, donated £100 from a raffle held at a recent Freemason’s event at Corinthian Lodge in Shildon.

And the group has also been named Shildon and District Flower Club’s charity of the year.

Chair person Elizabeth Varley said members would organise further fundraising events and collections in the future, as well as coordinating Marie Curie’s Daffodil Appeal in the town.

“We have about 12 members so far but we would love to get more people involved,” said Mrs Varley.

“The support we have had from people in the town has been amazing.”

Marie Curie Cancer Care is dedicated to the care of people with terminal illnesses.

Its expert nurses care for patients at home and in Marie Curie hospices to ensure they enjoy the best quality of life possible.

All of the money the Bishop Auckland group raises will benefit people in the local area.
