FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze in a derelict building earlier today (Monday January 6).
It broke out in a two-storey building on the road between Newfield and Chester-le-Street at about 6.20am.
The County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Services initially sent one crew to deal with the incident.
But a second crew from the High Handenhold fire station was despatched and an aerial ladder platform from Durham City.
A service spokeswoman said that in all, 16 firefighters dealt with the fire.
She added that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the cause of the blaze.
